Ovia Kumaran From Belgium

“My field of research is biochemistry and biotechnology. During my undergrad in India, I was a Khorana Fellow (2013) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and after my graduation I moved to Belgium for a Master’s in biophysics, biochemistry and biotechnology from KU Leuven. Thereafter with a personal grant from the research council Flanders (FWO), National fund for scientific research, I progressed my doctoral research under Prof. Hideaki Mizuno at the laboratory for biomolecular network dynamics, KU Leuven and obtained a PhD in 2020. Briefly, during my PhD research, I developed cell-based assays, employed advanced cutting-edge microscopy and followed an interdisciplinary approach involving biophysical and biochemical techniques to delineate the signalling mechanisms in live mammalian cells. Apart from research, I was involved at the Faculty of Science Education Board at KU Leuven to discuss the educational programmes offered at the Faculty of Science. At KU Leuven, I also represented the assisting academic staff at the Faculty of Science. Currently, I work as a Secure Data Manager in Clinical Trials at SGS, Belgium.”

Sucheta Ghosh From Switzerland

“This is Sucheta Ghosh. Currently, I am a Doctoral student (PhD) at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland affiliated to the University of Basel and Novartis. Broadly, I am studying the role of ubiquitin chains in viral infections as part of an ERC grant in the lab of Professor Patrick Matthias at the FMI also collaborating with the group of Yohei Yamauchi at the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Bristol, UK and the group of Jeffrey Bode at the Department of Chemistry, ETH Zürich. Prior to this, I completed my B.Tech in Biotechnology and graduated in 2017 from Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. I then qualified GATE Biotechnology in 2017 and went on to pursue M.Tech in Biotechnology from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, Himachal Pradesh and graduated in 2019.  During my M.Tech, I got selected as a Khorana Fellow in 2018 and did a 12 weeks research internship at the Johns Hopkins University- School of Medicine in the lab of Professor Guang William Wong at the Department of Physiology, an experience that changed my life for the better!”

Ritu Roy Chowdhury From Germany

“I completed my BS-MS in Biology from IISER Mohali, India before moving to Germany for my doctoral education. My relationship with WinStep and the Khorana scholarship program began in the summer of 2015 when I traveled to MIT, to perform an internship in the lab of Prof. Mriganka Sur as a Khorana scholar. I was further integrated into the MIT Summer Research Program, through which I was exposed to several prominent neuroscientists and fellow young neuroscientists who continue to be a part of my journey through life as a researcher. During my doctoral studies in Neuroscience, I have worked in labs at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology, Munich, and am currently at the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience, University of Tuebingen, Germany. I am a fellow of the International Max Planck Research School, in Tuebingen and Munich. In Munich, in the first part of my Ph.D., I studied the representation of anxiety within the posterior insular cortex of the brain, while in my current research project I am focussing on how the brain orchestrates sensorimotor integration using prediction coding.”

Sowmya Indrakumar From Denmark

“From my education, I bring a strong theoretical and experimental background within the field of computational protein modelling, alongside expertise in various biophysical techniques (SAXS, CD, NMR). Currently, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen, working with Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) using simulation techniques, NMR and CD. In 2019, I attained my PhD in computational protein chemistry from the Technical University of Denmark, which was funded by Marie Curie EU Horizon2020 ITN programme (link: http://www.pippi.kemi.dtu.dk). The PhD research focus was on the use of computational approaches to understand protein-excipient interaction hotspots and the conformational stability of therapeutic proteins in different physicochemical conditions of pH and ionic strength. In 2016, I earned a dual BS (honors) and MSc degree from the Indian Institute of Science in Biology with a minor in mathematics.“
